The stool is a modest type of seating: with no backrest or armrests, it is reduced to the minimum needed to sit. It is generally a temporary seat, one that you do not stay on for very long. The Main Courante stool takes this economy a step further. It refers to railings and barriers, which can serve as spartan yet sufficient seating solutions.
Main courante is a reimagining of these structures: the metal frame extends in three dimensions to become self-supporting. The wooden seat is made from a standard staircase handrail section, also called a main courante in French. It was exhibited in September 2026 as part of the ‘Bar Stool’ exhibition, curated by Quentin Frichet and Athime de Crecy.
